7 Simple DIY Cleaning Hacks Using Ingredients Already in Your Kitchen
Before you buy another bottle of cleaning spray, open your kitchen cupboard.
You might already have some surprisingly useful cleaning helpers sitting there.
Baking soda, vinegar, lemon and even ordinary salt can tackle plenty of everyday household messes — and you don't need to turn your kitchen into a chemistry lab.
1. Baking soda for stubborn smells
That fridge smell that refuses to leave?
Put an open bowl of baking soda inside and let it sit. Baking soda can help absorb odours, making it useful for fridges, cupboards and other enclosed spaces.
It's basically the quiet roommate who fixes the smell without complaining about it.
2. Lemon for a fresher microwave
Microwave looking like a crime scene after yesterday's curry?
Put some water and lemon slices in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it until the water gets steamy. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe the inside.
The steam helps loosen dried-on food, while the lemon leaves a fresher smell.
3. Vinegar for hard-water marks
Those cloudy marks around taps and shower fixtures are often caused by mineral deposits.
Diluted white vinegar can help loosen them. Apply it appropriately to the affected surface, allow it some time to work, then wipe and rinse.
Important: Don't use vinegar on natural stone such as marble or limestone — acids can damage these surfaces.
4. Salt for a smelly chopping board
Wooden chopping board carrying the memory of every onion you've ever chopped?
Sprinkle coarse salt over the surface and gently scrub it with half a lemon. Rinse afterwards and allow the board to dry thoroughly.
Simple, cheap and oddly satisfying.
5. Baking soda for greasy pans
Got a pan that looks like it has survived three battles?
Sprinkle baking soda over the greasy area, add a little water to make a paste and let it sit before scrubbing.
For delicate or non-stick cookware, check the manufacturer's cleaning instructions first.
6. Lemon for your cutting board
If your cutting board has lingering food smells, lemon can help freshen the surface.
Rub half a lemon over it, leave it briefly and rinse thoroughly.
Just remember: cleaning isn't the same as disinfecting. For food-safety concerns, use a food-safe disinfecting method recommended for your particular board.
7. Don't forget the humble dish soap
Sometimes the best cleaning hack isn't exotic at all.
A small amount of ordinary dish soap diluted appropriately can handle greasy fingerprints, many kitchen surfaces and everyday grime.
You don't necessarily need a different bottle for every object in your house.
One important rule
Never mix cleaning products randomly.
Especially never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners, because dangerous gases can form.
The goal is a cleaner home — not accidentally creating a science experiment.
And the best part?
You may already have most of these ingredients sitting in your kitchen.
Your cleaning cupboard might be much bigger than you thought.
